And while AI can offer efficiency, speed, and insights, it can also bring something else: <strong>bias, surveillance, and decisions made without accountability or explanation.<\/strong><br\/><br\/>That\u2019s why the European Union is stepping in with purpose. Two major legislative moves are now on the table: the <a href=\"https:\/\/artificialintelligenceact.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>EU AI Act<\/strong><\/a>, already adopted in 2024, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/joint-research-centre.ec.europa.eu\/projects-and-activities\/employment\/algorithmic-management-and-digital-monitoring-work_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Proposed Algorithmic Management Directive<\/strong><\/a>, still under discussion. These aren\u2019t just <a href=\"https:\/\/thehrchapter.com\/labour-law-employee-relations\/\">policy<\/a> tweaks; they are foundational shifts in how we <a href=\"https:\/\/thehrchapter.com\/employee-insurances-pension-plans\/\">protect workers<\/a>, uphold dignity in the workplace, and ensure that technology serves humanity, not the other way around.<br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Understanding the EU AI Act<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"qoptk116\" style=\"padding-bottom:-20px\">In August 2024, the European Union did something groundbreaking. It introduced the <strong>EU AI Act<\/strong>, the world\u2019s first full-scale legal framework to govern artificial intelligence. This isn\u2019t just a tech regulation, it\u2019s a <em>people-first<\/em> law. One that dares to ask: <em>How do we build trust in AI, while protecting the very human lives it touches?<\/em><br\/><br\/>Across Europe, AI isn\u2019t some distant concept. It\u2019s already reading r\u00e9sum\u00e9s, scheduling shifts, tracking productivity, and shaping careers. The EU AI Act says: if we\u2019re going to allow machines to make decisions about people\u2019s lives, then we better do it right. Ethically. Transparently. And with clear guardrails.<br\/><br\/><strong>The four levels of AI risk and why HR is in the hot seat<\/strong><br\/>The EU AI Act doesn\u2019t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, it looks at <strong>risk<\/strong> and assigns responsibilities based on how much potential harm an AI system could do.
